Avani Sukhumvit Bangkok - TALES OF ROMANCE - Love, laughter and happily ever after at Avani Sukhumvit Bangkok

Hola Mexicano

If you are looking for a true taste of genuine Mexican food in Bangkok, the popular Mexicano Restaurante Autentico at Rembrandt Hotel is a standout restaurant serving only the best Mexican food. Formerly Senor Pico, Mexicano has refocused it culinary gaze on traditional Mexican fare rather than the standard Tex-Mex approach that has been so ubiquitous for many years. Book at table for the weekend and treat your family to the best Mexican Sunday Brunch to be found anywhere in the Kingdom.

The open-fronted restaurant instantly reminds diners of a typical Mexican home with its terra cotta and stone decor, period photos of famous Mexicans and flashes of green, red and white, the colours of the Mexican flag. At the far-end of the restaurant, a small raised stage is where the live entertainment takes place with Mexican bands and singers providing the perfect accompaniment to the delightful cuisine.

Mexicano is a popular weekend brunch experience.

As we were shown to our table, Chef Carlos Bravo, a native Mexican who is passionate about the food he serves at Mexicano, dropped by to welcome us to the restaurant. The larger-than-life chef obviously enjoys his work as he stops at every table to check that guests are enjoying the food and then his attention is back to the kitchen to tackle the next task. Sunday Brunch at Mexicano brings together dozens of different culinary choices such as mains, salads, soups, salsa and more: a true cornucopia of Mexican cuisine.

I caught up with Chef Carlos as brought out yet another fresh batch of guacamole and he informed me his inspiration for Mexicano’s Sunday Brunch menu came from his childhood days in Mexico and his family visits to his grandmother’s house every Sunday where comida de la abuela or grandma’s food always took centre stage. “We wanted to do something a little different rather than serving regular Mexican food,” says Chef Carlos. “While most of our clients are familiar with well-known Mexican dishes such as chili con carne, I decided the evoke memories of my grandmother’s food and introduce as many regional dishes as I could.

Mexicano offers a wide variety of authentic Mexican dishes.

“We change the menu each week to give our guests a wide range of delicious choices, but we retain the main cooking stations such as the grill for fresh meats and seafood, the fresh quesadilla station and our freshly grilled kebab. Some of our highlight dishes include mole de olla beef soup, beef Fajita with onions, chilli relleno with cheese and of course our freshly made guacamole thats perfect with tortilla chips.”

Don’t miss the fantastic grill station for seafood, beef and lamb.

From this reviewers perspective, I wholeheartedly recommend a visit to the grill station where the most succulent lamb chops and beef steaks are cooked to perfection, while Chef Carlos and his staff also prep, cook and served a wide variety of seafood including fish, oysters, prawns and squid. Once you place your order, go and browse the other live cooking stations and order freshly cooked quesadillas with lots of cheese before getting to grips with the various fresh salads prepared with fresh fruits such as mango and apple and a healthy serving of various nuts.

Diners have plenty of live cooking stations to choose from.

Freshly cooked dishes include the mouthwatering Mexican pork green sauce, which is similar to the Thai green curry, the melt-in-your-mouth beef Fajitas with onions, Chilli relleno with cheese, Eggplant, champinon and potatoes with garlic and green rice. An array of sauces and salsas also boost the colourful look with a super turkey chipotle sauce, salsa Borracha, which is traditionally served with lamb and other meats but makes a great all-purpose salsa and the fantastic guacamole. To really add a touch of spice to your brunch add a splash of habanero green salsa or the fiery salsa de Arbol.

Don’t forger to order your freshly cooked quesadillas.

The Sunday Brunch package is priced at Bt1,250 net per person (Bt650 for kids aged 6-12 years old) and includes unlimited free flow margaritas and sangria.
