Banyan Group has officially launched Mamula Island by Banyan Tree, marking the opening of the luxury brand’s first resort in Europe. Set on a private island at the entrance to Montenegro’s UNESCO-listed Bay of Kotor, the 32-room retreat occupies a restored 19th-century fortress overlooking the Adriatic Sea. The resort combines heritage architecture with contemporary luxury, offering signature wellness experiences, destination dining, and a programme of cultural activities. Europe Welcomes Banyan Tree
Originally built in the 1850s as a coastal defence fort, Fort Mamula has been transformed following a seven-year restoration led by developer Samih Sawiris in partnership with architects, conservation specialists, and local heritage authorities. The interiors combine original stonework with contemporary design, featuring natural materials, bespoke furnishings, and craftsmanship inspired by local traditions.

All rooms and suites enjoy uninterrupted sea views. Heritage Suites retain many of the fortress’s original architectural features, while newly built accommodation features floor-to-ceiling windows and private terraces. The award-winning Heritage Sky Suites have previously been recognised among Europe’s finest hotel suites.
Dining showcases seasonal Montenegrin produce and fresh Adriatic seafood. Parasol serves seafood-inspired dishes beside the resort’s three outdoor pools, Kamena Restaurant highlights locally sourced ingredients overlooking the sea, while Celeste offers relaxed Mediterranean dining. Pinea Bar completes the experience with handcrafted cocktails and live evening entertainment.

Located within the historic fortress, the Banyan Tree Spa offers treatments inspired by local botanicals alongside traditional Thai, Indonesian, and Chinese therapies. Facilities include Finnish and herbal saunas, a steam room, halotherapy room, flotation chamber, hydrotherapy experiences, and a fully equipped gym.
Away from the spa, guests can explore the island and surrounding coastline by kayak, paddleboard, water bike or e-bike, or join excursions to Kotor Old Town, the Blue Cave, Skadar Lake, Cetinje and, the Tara River.

Mamula Island also celebrates Montenegro’s creative heritage through an Artists-in-Residence programme featuring exhibitions, workshops, live performances, and the Operosa Music Festival. The entire island is also available for exclusive hire for weddings, private events, and corporate retreats.
