Zentis Osaka will launch the third edition of its Art-in-Residence programme this June with a year-long collaboration celebrating the art of Japanese calligraphy, or shodō. The initiative will showcase the works of renowned calligraphy masters Baikei Uehira and his son, Taiga Uehira, while introducing a new stay experience designed to immerse guests in one of Japan’s most revered artistic traditions.

Running until March 2027, the collaboration will feature 11 original works displayed throughout the boutique hotel’s public spaces. Together, the father-and-son duo explore the theme of “Inheritance and Evolution”, reflecting their shared commitment to preserving more than 1,000 years of calligraphic heritage while introducing contemporary expressions of the art form for modern audiences.

A pioneering figure in live calligraphy performances, Baikei Uehira is also president of the Osaka-based Seisho Calligraphy Association, which he founded to promote shodō as a practice that combines artistic expression with mindfulness and self-reflection. Inspired by his father’s legacy, Taiga Uehira established Calligraphia Japan with the ambition of presenting Japanese calligraphy to international audiences through innovative and accessible experiences.

“The deep contemplation and renewal of the spirit offered by Zentis Osaka resonates profoundly with the internal exploration and expression found in shodō,” said Baikei Uehira.

“Themed around ‘Inheritance and Evolution’, this exhibition reflects our desire to visualise the cultural thread that connects past, present and future,” added Taiga Uehira. “We hope guests will experience how timeless traditions can evolve through new encounters and continue to inspire future generations.”

Complementing the exhibition, Zentis Osaka has introduced ‘The Essence of Shodō at Zentis Osaka’, a stay package that allows guests to engage with the art form beyond the gallery setting through a hands-on cultural experience.

Available for stays from today until 31st March 2027, the package includes a two-night stay in a Studio, Corner Studio or Suite, together with a private 60-minute calligraphy lesson at the Seisho Calligraphy Association. Led by either Baikei or Taiga Uehira, subject to availability, the session provides an introduction to the techniques, philosophy and mindfulness behind shodō.

Guests will also receive a traditional water calligraphy practice set to continue their journey at home, along with bath salts infused with Parfum Satori’s signature fragrance, inspired by the sense of calm and reflection associated with the art. At the conclusion of the lesson, participants will take home a traditional Japanese fan featuring either their own calligraphy or a personalised piece created by their instructor.

“When we travel, meaningful cultural experiences have the power to stay with us long after we return home,” said General Manager Kiyotaka Saito. “Through this encounter with more than a millennium of Japanese culture, we hope guests will discover fresh inspiration, renewed creativity and a deeper appreciation of Japan’s artistic heritage.”

‘The Essence of Shodō at Zentis Osaka’ is now available with rates starting from Bt13,600++ (¥67,000) based on double occupancy, excluding taxes and service charge.
