Outrigger Resorts & Hotels has achieved Green Key certification for three of its beachfront resorts in Thailand, marking a significant milestone in the company’s long-term sustainability strategy and reinforcing its commitment to responsible hospitality and environmental stewardship.
Operated by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), Green Key is one of the world’s leading standards for sustainable hospitality excellence. Certification is awarded following a rigorous third-party audit assessing a property’s performance across a broad range of environmental and operational criteria, including energy efficiency, water conservation, waste management and community engagement.

The three resorts to receive Green Key certification are Outrigger Surin Beach Resort, Outrigger Khao Lak Beach Resort, and Outrigger Koh Samui Beach Resort.
“At Outrigger, we understand that we are guardians of our destinations and have a responsibility to protect them for future generations,” said Damian Clowes, Regional Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Outrigger Hospitality Group. “Wherever we operate, we strive to minimise our environmental footprint while working closely with local communities to create a positive impact. Achieving Green Key certification at these three resorts is an important milestone and a clear reflection of our sustainability strategy in action.”

Sustainability has been embedded into Outrigger’s operations through Outrigger Zone, the company’s global environmental platform launched in 2014. The initiative focuses on nature conservation, resource efficiency, waste reduction and responsible sourcing across all destinations where the brand operates. As a specialist in beachfront hospitality, Outrigger also places strong emphasis on protecting marine and coastal ecosystems through initiatives including beach clean-ups, coral restoration projects, mangrove planting and community partnerships.
As the world marks World Ocean Month this June, the company continues to prioritise marine conservation while investing in new technologies and operational practices designed to create long-term environmental benefits across its destinations.

In Thailand, a range of local sustainability programmes has helped strengthen Outrigger’s connection to both the environment and surrounding communities, while supporting the certification process at all three resorts. Following the success of the properties in Phuket, Khao Lak and Koh Samui, Outrigger Phi Phi Island Resort is also preparing to begin its own Green Key certification journey.
Located along Phuket’s sunset coast, Outrigger Surin Beach Resort combines boutique beachfront living with environmentally conscious operations. The resort incorporates chemical-free cleaning products, low-energy lighting systems and water-saving technologies throughout the property, while continuing to maintain a high standard of guest comfort. Restaurants prioritise eco-labelled ingredients, guest amenities are made using recycled materials and the surrounding beach is carefully maintained to preserve its natural beauty.

At Outrigger Khao Lak Beach Resort, sustainability initiatives are closely tied to marine conservation. The resort has supported local organisations in constructing protected hatcheries for sea turtle eggs, helping improve hatchling survival rates before release into the ocean. Guests and associates have also participated in sea turtle release programmes, alongside mangrove reforestation and beach clean-up activities designed to strengthen the region’s coastal ecosystem.
Meanwhile, Outrigger Koh Samui Beach Resort has become an active supporter of marine biodiversity on Lamai Beach. Over the past four years, the resort has partnered with Baan Tai Crab Bank to nurture and release juvenile crabs back into the sea, while a separate environmental initiative has seen 15 rai (2.4 hectares) of seagrass planted to support marine habitats. The resort also operates its Coral Kids Club, which introduces younger guests to environmental awareness and recycling through interactive activities, while native plant species across the property are labelled to help visitors learn more about Koh Samui’s local flora.

Through these initiatives, Outrigger continues to strengthen its position as a hospitality brand committed not only to exceptional beachfront experiences, but also to protecting the destinations and communities that define them.
