The Sanctuary Resort Pattaya

The Sanctuary Resort Pattaya

When we first pulled up to The Sanctuary Resort Pattaya, BW Signature Collection, we weren’t quite sure what to expect. Pattaya is full of hotels that call themselves ‘boutique’ or ‘luxury’, but often, that can be little more than clever marketing. But as soon as we stepped through the glass doors into the airy, contemporary lobby, we knew this place was different.

Having recently returned from an extended stay in the UK, we were looking for somewhere by the sea to escape Bangkok’s oppressive heat – and traffic – for a few days. A boutique-style property, this hotel promised a blend of contemporary comfort, beach proximity, and reasonable rates – and for the most part, it delivered.

Arriving after a two-hour drive from Bangkok – Pattaya is about 150 kilometres east and easy to reach by car or bus – we pulled into a small but well-maintained free parking area under the hotel. The Sanctuary is tucked between South Pattaya and Jomtien Beach, where it feels quieter and more residential than the more hectic parts of Sin City.

The Huge Lobby

The check-in process was swift, and the staff were welcoming, greeting us with a cold and refreshing drink. We felt like we’d arrived somewhere that values hospitality as much as style. One of the hotel’s main highlights are the two large illuminated aquariums in front of which guests and diners pose for photos. In the lobby area, the aquarium is filled with small reef fish, including a few baby ‘Nimos’, while in Oceana Restaurant, the aquarium is home to two black tip sharks called Hanna and Marco.

The Sanctuary is part of BW Signature Collection, which balances upscale touches with approachable rates. The hotel is a stone’s throw from Dongtan Beach, several convenience stores, a handful of restaurants and cafes, plus lots of bars, all which line Phratamnak Soi 5.

Rooms & Comfort

The hotel offers 164 rooms and suites across several categories: Deluxe Rooms, Junior Suites, and Family Suites with bunk beds for kids. We booked a Premium Junior Suite with a panoramic sea view. The room had a fresh, contemporary design – light marble floors, crisp white linens, and floor-to-ceiling windows leading out to a private balcony. It wasn’t enormous, but it felt bright and airy. A Nespresso machine, complimentary bottled water, and good Wi-Fi added practical comforts. The bathroom was spacious, featuring a rain shower, bathtub and sleek marble finishes, though we did notice a bit of wear around the fittings. Other guests have mentioned maintenance issues, but during our stay everything worked fine.

Facilities & Amenities

The Sanctuary has plenty of features that make it feel like a little resort rather than just a city hotel. There’s a rooftop swimming pool and Jacuzzi (which were being upgraded during our stay), a small fitness centre with cardio equipment, a large pool bar, and plenty of seating with view out over the Gulf of Thailand. Also, on the ground floor, there is a small indoor children’s play area, which is ideal for parents with young children.

Exploring The Neighbourhood

One of the biggest advantages of staying here is proximity to the beach. Dongtan Beach is just a five-minute walk down the road, and you can continue on foot to Jomtien Beach, which stretches for several kilometres. It’s not the most pristine coastline in Thailand – Pattaya beaches can be a bit littered – but it’s pleasant for a morning or evening walk or casual swim.

Around the hotel, you’ll find convenience stores, a 7-Eleven, and plenty of massage parlours where foot massages start around Bt200 per hour. Pratamnak Hill is also nearby, known for its viewpoint with panoramic city views and the Big Buddha Temple. For shopping, the vibrant Thepprasit Night Market (open Fridays to Sundays) is about 10 minutes away by taxi and sells everything from street food to cheap clothes and souvenirs.

If you’re in the mood for nightlife, Walking Street is roughly a 10-minute ride – close enough to enjoy but far enough that you won’t hear any noise back at the hotel.

Getting There

The easiest way to reach Pattaya from Bangkok is by private car or taxi, which takes about two hours on the highway. For budget travellers, buses run frequently from Bangkok’s Ekkamai Bus Terminal, while the new air-conditioned minivans are even faster and more comfortable. The U-Tapao–Rayong–Pattaya International Airport is about 50 minutes away if you’re connecting from elsewhere in Thailand.

Final Thoughts

Overall, The Sanctuary Resort Pattaya combines modern design, thoughtful amenities, and a surprisingly tranquil atmosphere for its location. It’s a smart choice if you want a relaxing escape without breaking the bank. The rooms are comfortable, the dining is better than average, and the rooftop pool and bar are genuine highlights. While it’s not without minor flaws – some maintenance issues and an inconsistent beach experience – we’d recommend it for couples, families, or anyone who wants a stylish base to explore Pattaya.

Would we return? Absolutely. For the price and convenience, it’s hard to beat – and it left us refreshed, recharged, and already planning our next visit.
