The name Dijon usually conjures up the pungent flavours of the well-loved mustard. But the quaint French capital of Burgundy has a lot more going for it than its namesake’s condiment. Dijon boasts over 400 restaurants, has a rich cultural heritage and is also home to Design Hotels member, Vertigo Hotel.

Set in a Haussmann-style listed property dating back to the 1920’s, architect Yvon Carminati took on the challenge of modernising the 42-room hotel. Working closely with interior designer Ludivine De Brito, they ensured that the building’s history was maintained while undergoing the extensive renovation. Introducing pieces from international designers such as Marcel Wanders, Didier Gomez, Pierre Paulin and Tom Dixon, De Brito injected the property with contemporary art to match the hotel’s overall design prowess.

With a focus on service, the hotel welcomes guests as soon as they enter the driveway. L’Embassy Bar, with its retro interiors, offers vintage burgundy wines, Champagne and cocktails. The private cinema, cigar lounge, I Feel Good Spa by KOS Paris, indoor swimming pool, hammam and sauna all ensure the ultimate holiday repose. For those who are able to tear themselves away from the comfort of the hotel, complimentary BMW i3 electric cars and bicycles are on hand for a sustainable tour of the area.

Situated on Place Darcy, one of Dijon’s most beautiful squares, Vertigo Hotel is located in the heart of the city. As one of France’s four official cities of gastronomy, Dijon boasts over 400 restaurants, several of which are Michelin-starred. With over 100 hectares of listed buildings, constituting one of the largest culturally protected areas in France, the city is rich in history and cultural heritage.
