Accor China Hits 800 Hotels

Accor has marked a significant milestone in its expansion across China with the opening of its 800th hotel in Greater China, the Sofitel Changzhou Hi-Tech District. This landmark property reflects the group’s continued commitment to the region and highlights the importance of the Chinese market within its broader global strategy. Developed in partnership with High-speed Railway New City Company and Changzhou Hi-Tech Group Co., Ltd., the hotel stands as both a symbol of growth and a statement of intent as Accor continues to strengthen its presence in key economic hubs across the country. Located in Changzhou’s High-Speed Rail New Town, the hotel occupies a prime position overlooking Xinlong Lake and sits within a district characterised by modern infrastructure, environmentally conscious development, and a concentration of technology-driven enterprises. Its proximity to Changzhou North Station, within walking distance, and a 30-minute drive from Benniu International Airport, makes it particularly well suited to both business and leisure travellers seeking convenience alongside a more tranquil, lakeside setting. Positioned along the important Shanghai–Nanjing corridor, Changzhou itself blends a rich cultural heritage spanning over a thousand years with a dynamic, forward-looking economy, making it an increasingly attractive destination within the Yangtze River Delta.

The Sofitel Changzhou Hi-Tech District forms part of the wider Starry City, also known as the Xinlong Lake International Financial Plaza, a major mixed-use development designed to integrate commerce, culture, and tourism. This area is supported by strong infrastructure and a well-established commercial ecosystem, further enhanced by nearby attractions such as Xinlong Lake Football Park and Changzhou Culture Plaza. Together, these elements contribute to a vibrant urban environment, positioning the hotel as a refined addition that complements the district’s evolving identity.

Design at the property is guided by Sofitel’s philosophy of blending French elegance with local cultural influences, encapsulated in the concept of “a dialogue of two worlds, a journey home”. This is reflected throughout the hotel’s architecture and interiors, where elements of French art de vivre are combined with the understated sophistication of Jiangnan traditions. Guests are welcomed into spaces defined by lofty domed ceilings and a calming palette that creates an atmosphere of quiet luxury. The intention is to deliver not only visual impact but also a sense of comfort and familiarity.

The hotel features 293 guest rooms and suites, each designed to evoke the feeling of a private residence. Details such as entrance lighting that marks the moment of arrival and displays of Changzhou’s traditional needlework embroidery help to create a connection to the local culture. Sofitel’s signature bedding enhances the sense of comfort, while furnishings draw on both French and Chinese influences, incorporating features such as screens, dressing tables and walk-in wardrobes. The overall design strikes a balance between elegance and minimalism, reinforcing the brand’s focus on refined yet approachable luxury.

Beyond the guest rooms, the hotel offers extensive facilities tailored to both corporate and social occasions. With 4,000-square-metres of event space, it is well equipped to host conferences, weddings and large-scale gatherings. Two column-free ballrooms, notable for their generous ceiling heights and flexible layouts, form the centrepiece of these offerings, supported by a range of additional meeting rooms. Leisure facilities include a pool and spa overlooking the lake, designed to provide a sense of calm and well-being, while the Club Millésime offers an elevated experience with personalised service for guests seeking additional exclusivity.

Culinary experiences at the hotel reflect its cross-cultural identity, bringing together international flavours and local specialities. The Italian restaurant, La Strada, draws inspiration from the charm of European street cafés, serving handmade pasta and familiar dishes in a relaxed setting. In contrast, the Chinese restaurant, Astral Lake, celebrates regional cuisine, combining Changzhou flavours with influences from Shunde to create a distinctive Jiangnan dining experience. Other venues include a bistro offering global cuisine in a lively environment, a lobby lounge serving Sofitel’s signature afternoon tea, and a bakery concept that reimagines the traditional croissant through a blend of French technique and seasonal local ingredients.

Sustainability has also been a key consideration in the development of the hotel. As a LEED-certified building, it incorporates environmentally responsible design and operational practices. This commitment extends beyond the property itself to the wider Starry City development, which features a rainwater recycling system capable of managing a significant proportion of annual runoff, helping to conserve water and reduce environmental impact. Such initiatives align with broader efforts to promote sustainable urban development within the region.

The opening of Sofitel Changzhou Hi-Tech District not only represents a milestone for Accor but also underscores the strategic importance of Greater China within the group’s global portfolio. With approximately 30 per cent of Accor’s worldwide project signings located in the region, China continues to play a central role in its growth ambitions. The group currently operates 17 brands across the country and plans to introduce more from its wider portfolio of 45 brands, working closely with local partners to expand its footprint and deliver high-quality, differentiated hospitality experiences.
